Weekend Workshops
Canine Communication, Handling and Husbandry- 21st-22nd March ‘09
During this course participants will learn about the basis of canine behaviour and the likely behavioural responses of dogs dependant on instinct, motivation, breed and previous learnt behaviours. Participants will learn how to predict behaviours by recognising subtle and overt signals given in communication. In addition the course will give advice on canine handling in various situations and differing levels of restraint that can be used as well as the basic husbandry requirements for dogs in care.
This course is designed for anyone working with dogs that they are not familiar with; veterinary nurses, kennel workers, rescue workers, animal collections officers, shelter volunteers, dog trainers, pet dog owners and many others.
Some on-site (pet friendly) accommodation is available.
Dogs are not really suited to be in the workshop.
Canine Care: What you need to know for your dog to be happy and healthy- 18th-19th April.
Participants of this course will gain a basic understanding of how to care for their dog from puppy to old age and in particular provide care that will enhance natural behaviours and develop a strong and secure owner-dog bond. The course includes health and coat care, nutrition and feeding, physical and mental stimulation, socialisation and training.
This course is designed for the new puppy owner (ideally prior to puppy purchase, but equally important for the new puppy or rescue dog owner). The whole family can be catered for at this workshop and dogs are welcome in some sessions. Canine Professions may also have an interest in the course.
Some on-site (pet friendly) accommodation is available with day kennels.
Canine Rescue, Rehabilitation and Re-homing- 9th-10th May
This weekend workshop covers basic handling and restraint (in particular of the un-socialised nervous or aggressive dog), dog assessment, simple training that can aid re-homing, owner assessment and the re-homing process. Despite all the fantastic work that rescuers do, there is a huge responsibility in matching dogs with new owners and it is important that is not undertaken lightly. This course helps remind participants of this and gives advice and information in support of this important job.
This weekend course is mainly geared at those working in the rescue and re-homing of dogs whether independently or through a recognised charity or organisation, it may though be of interest to owners of rescued dogs or students wishing to get involved in this area.
Pet friendly accommodation is available, with kennels for dogs during the day.
No dogs at this workshop please.
Introduction to Agility- 27th-28th June
Ever watched agility on TV or at a dog show? Ever thought you’d like to try it with your dog? Well now you can in the Happier Hounds Dog Training Introductory Agility Weekend Workshop. During the weekend you and your dog will be introduced to agility equipment such as the jumps, tyre, tunnel and see-saw whilst being guided in basic obedience important in agility and how to link obstacles into simple courses. Health and safety in agility is also addressed as well as advice being given to owners about how to continue agility training at home.
This course is designed for all dog owners, as all breeds can attempt agility. A well-socialised dog responsive to basic commands is preferable, but not a strict requirement. Aggressive dogs should not attend. Dog Trainers or students interested in training may also be interested. There are limited participant places but additional places are available for spectators only.
Limited Pet friendly accommodation is available for the weekend on site.
Unlock your dogs potential- Get Clicking!- 25th-26th July
Clicker Training is a modern training method using the dogs’ motivations and attempts at behaviours to train new and varied commands. After an introduction to using the clicker participants are guide through basic obedience to simple tricks and moves and then complex shaped commands. This is a great introduction for owners wanting to open the door to fun and accurate behavioural performances.
This weekend is available for all dog owners, as clicker training is suitable for all. Well-socialised non-reactive dogs that will take food from the hand are preferable, although the weekend can cater for one or two dogs with ‘dog issues’, as the clicker can be useful in promoting calm dog-dog interactions. Severely aggressive dogs should not attend. Dog Trainers or students interested in training may also be interested. There are limited participant places but additional places are available for spectators only
Limited Pet friendly accommodation is available for the weekend on site.
More Fun Matters-Canine Games 15th-16th August
This weekend workshop is based on the six week course also held at Happier Hounds Dog Training. Both workshop and course are about promoting fun times with your dog as well as providing opportunities for advanced socialisation. Participants of the workshop have a weekend of fun and friendship with their dog and other dog owners as they play games such as musical statues, hide and seek, target rounders, relay races… and many more! A great way to end the summer and start an autumn of fabulous fun ways to train!
The workshop is open for all owners (young and old) with all breeds of dogs. Again well socialised responsive dogs with basic obedience training is preferable so that everyone can get the most out of the weekend. There are limited participant places but additional places are available for spectators only.
Limited Pet friendly accommodation is available for the weekend on site.
